Inspiring Hope and Possibilities
in Children and Youth

Rhonda J.  Kent, MA Counselling, RSW

This workshop looks at how we inspire hope and possibilities in children and youth who have been through difficult life experiences. Children who have experienced trauma often have a foreshortened sense of future that can leave them feeling hopeless and vulnerable to high risk behaviours. Through the use of media images and creative interventions, therapists, mental health professionals, educators and others working with children can attempt to re-engage children and youth with a sense of purpose and hope for a brighter future.

Rhonda J. Kent has over 20 years of experience working in the areas of domestic violence, suicide and grief and loss and is trained several evidence-based trauma therapies for children and adults such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention (CFTSI) and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT).  Rhonda has completed Phase I level training in the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics through the ChildTrauma Academy. She has specialized in both individual and group work with children and teens who have witnessed or experienced family violence and uses both play and art therapy approaches. Rhonda has been a Suicide ASIST trainer for the past 6 years as well as both volunteering and then working in the area of suicide for many years in the past.  Rhonda is also a volunteer for both the Calgary Fire Department and Calgary EMS on their Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Teams. Rhonda has developed and facilitated workshops for local and international conferences, including the International Violence and Trauma (IVAT) Conference in San Diego in 2011 and 2012. She currently works as the Clinical Supervisor of Children’s Counselling Services at a non-profit organization in Calgary, and sees clients through her own private practice – Regeneration Counselling and Consulting.
