CREATIVE INTERVENTIONS FOR CHILDREN & FAMILIES
The creative use of games, art, and stories in therapy is an effective way to engage clients and help them to resolve difficulties. Expanding your repertoire beyond traditional “talk therapy” to include play and expressive arts will make individual, group, and family therapy sessions more engaging and effective. Techniques will be illustrated to facilitate rapport and to engage children and families in therapy. Best-selling author and one of Canada’s foremost presenters on play therapy, Liana Lowenstein will outline a step-by-step assessment model and participants will learn how to use the assessment as a basis for formulating treatment plans.
A variety of structured games, art activities, stories, and other techniques will be highlighted. The techniques will be applied to specific clinical examples to illustrate how they can be used to help clients work through treatment issues such as feelings identification, anger management, social skills, stress reduction, and self-esteem.
The activities presented can be used with a wide range of presenting problems and difficulties such as family violence, divorce, grief and loss, serious illness, and placement in out-of-home care. Videos and live demonstrations will illustrate techniques. This workshop will be fun and interactive, and participants will come away with many new techniques to add to their existing repertoire.
You will learn
- Benefits to using play, art, and other expressive techniques in family therapy
- Strategies to overcome challenges in family play therapy
- Engagement, assessment, and treatment techniques for children and families
